Girls & Leadership

Amelia

I started a T’ai Chi Chih class a few weeks ago and it’s made me very mindful of how much fear I hold in my body on a daily basis. It’s not that I have anything to fear really, but just being alive can sometimes be cause for alarm. I’m working on being more peaceful and aware of my feelings. It’s been really fun actually. My hope is that it will allow me to be more comfortable doing new things not just things I know I’m good at.

Stepping out of our comfort zone can be challenging and often it is the dramatic life events that force us to do new things that are hard. Losing my husband suddenly five years ago forced me to step into new roles. I had to become a leader in so many ways. I had just started my company Ocean SF, and was teaching at UC Berkeley and with the sudden death I had to lead my family through the darkest moments we had ever faced. My daughters looked to me to guide them through this tragedy as did our extended family and friends. Falling apart felt like a good idea at the time, but that wasn’t possible because if I did that everyone would fall apart. So, instead I stepped up and from there I simply put one foot in front of the other.

That was five years ago.

Over the summer I organized a girls leadership camp. I taught 42 girls about strength and courage, being a leader and following your dreams. It was miraculous how enlightening it was for everyone involved including my two college age daughters who sat in on most classes.

Next week, I am moving to a Zoom format. I teach an adult leadership class at UC Berkeley and it’s surprisingly intimate and convenient for everyone. I’ve gotten great reviews from my students and my class is often waitlisted, so I hope this class for girls will be the same. Please do contact me if you would like to sign up. I also do private coaching and speak to groups.

Information on my class is below. Love and blessings to all.
