Synchronicity

Synchronicity (German: Synchronizität) is a concept, first introduced by analytical psychologist Carl Jung, which holds that events are “meaningful coincidences” if they occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related.

Over the past several years, I’ve had many meaningful coincidences, so much so that I started writing them all down in a notebook.  One of them was the initials of a college boyfriend that are now in my license plate, exactly and in order.  Or, seeing constantly the initials, JW of a close friend of mine, this happens all the time, and every where I go.  I take pictures of them and send them to him.  I have no idea what it means.

Recently, after the ash spreading ceremony, I was in San Diego for a soccer tournament and sitting in my room.  My daughter and I were tempted to stay in for the night, and order room service, but decided since we were there, and it was a beautiful night, we should go out and join our friends.

I went down to the resteraunt, and my daughter to catch up with the team at the pool.

When I stepped onto the patio, the band was playing the song, “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young.  When I first met my husband, he had this album, of the same name, and played it all the time.  For a while, we commuted to work together, as we were next door neighbors, and I remember listening to it every morning, and especially the beautiful love song, Harvest Moon.  It’s a hauntingly beautiful song, and it moved me to tears.  Once seated, I ordered some Ahi and a salad, and the waiter had a name tag with the same name as my husband.  It was a strange series of conincidences.

The song reminds me of my husband because he was my neighbor, and before he met me, he would watch me from his balony that overlooked the pool.

Neil Young Lyrics
“Harvest Moon”

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away.

But there’s a full moon risin’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light
We know where the music’s playin’
Let’s go out and feel the night.

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

But now it’s gettin’ late
And the moon is climbin’ high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin’ in your eye.

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.
